For The People is just as the name suggests, an exhibition for the people of Atlanta, but it is also a representation of the political work and activism of Black women throughout the history of the United States. This exhibition highlights and reveres what they have done for us, the people.

The exhibition will consist of a series of large scale printed reproductions of artwork that will be publicly displayed throughout the Sweet Auburn Neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia where the “March on For Voting Rights” will occur. Taking place on the 58th anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech, “March On for Voting Rights” is a national mobilization rallying against the wave of voter restriction laws being passed after the 2020 presidential election that specifically disenfranchise marginalized communities.

Featuring all Black women photographers from across the United states and framed by the procession of the protest, For The People is reexamining the camera and its use through the American civil rights movement. The protests, speeches and marches have all been emblazoned into the visual history of the United States through photographic documentation. The exhibition is reengaging with this history, it is building a visual conversation between these captured moments and the new lens with which these artists engage with our social and civic surroundings.

As much activism has taken place in the streets, so will this exhibition. It exists in the very arena where many civil rights battles have been fought and won. Using this site of action as its surroundings, For The People celebrates the importance of Black women in the progression of social and racial justice in the United States. It is a thank you and an acknowledgement for all of us to take part in.

The exhibition will be unveiled by Martin Luther King III, Arndrea King and Yolanda King on August 24th on Auburn Ave in Atlanta, GA, the street which was once known as Atlanta’s Black Wall Street and the street where Martin Luther King Jr was born and raised.
